Course objectives
The aim of the course is to understand the principles of voluntary work with seniors and motivation and theoretical preparation for volunteer work both from the perspective of volunteer and from the point of view of volunteer management. Students will be introduced with the specifics of voluntary work with seniors and they will have a place for discussion and practical verification of knowledge. Students can practice volunteering in social care facilities for the elderly (homes for the elderly, nursing, sheltered housing, relief services, day care centers, day care rooms, weekly homes, special-purpose homes), in homes for disabled people, in hospitals, long-term care clinics, clubs for seniors, and events organized for the target group of seniors. The subject will be divided into two parts - 6 hours of contact instruction and 12 hours of practice in the facility.
Syllabus
  • 1. Volunteering, concept, principles of volunteering in the field of work with seniors.
    2. Types of volunteering, areas of volunteering. Volunteering in the US, in Europe, international volunteer organization focused on working with seniors.
    3. General Declaration on Volunteering, Legislation of Volunteerism in the Czech Republic.
    4. The history of volunteering in the Czech Republic with emphasis on volunteer work with the elderly.
    5. Opportunities and barriers in volunteering in the Czech Republic, volunteer centers, organizations and projects, strong and the weaknesses of volunteering with the elderly.
    6. The personality of the volunteer and the specific demands placed on person in the field of work with the elderly. Burnout syndrome in volunteer work with seniors, supervision.
    7. Methods of acquiring, preparing, recording and supervising of volunteers, communicating with volunteers, communication possibilities - communication barriers - situational contexts in volunteer work with seniors.
    8. Volunteer Management. Rewarding of volunteers and the possibility of rewarding, interaction between volunteers and non - volunteers. Relationship employee - volunteer - supporter - public.
    9. Methodology of working with volunteers working with the elderly. Preparation of organization and selection of activities for volunteers, volunteer coordinator, selection and training of volunteers who will work with the elderly.
    10. Examples of activities from volunteer centers working with the target group of seniors. Examples of volunteer programs aimed to volunteering with seniors.
    11. Necessary knowledge and skills for volunteer practice with seniors. Communication and assertiveness.
    12. Necessary knowledge and skills for volunteer practice with seniors. Emotions, assumptions, behavior, development, non-verbal, verbal, expressive, empathetic.
    13. Senior as a volunteer. Motivation, goal and stimulation. Motivation of seniors in volunteer activities. Benefits of volunteering for the elderly.

During the semester, students will be lead to volunteer work and to understanding its meaning. The practice will be individually supervised according to the student's needs. The subject will then be terminated by a discussion of the prepared essay on Volunteering and including selected correspondence tasks.
