Prerequisites
An intermediate knowledge of the English language and a history of secondary school courses or individual courses are expected. Actively participating in the seminars, students will further improve their language skills in everyday situations and profession-related settings both in written and spoken form.
Further requirements: preparation for seminars (individual presentations), active participation in discussion, submission of an independent assignment (translation).

Course objectives
Study Outcomes: The course aims at developing students´ ability to actively, fluently and correctly express themselves in everyday situations and field-specific situations related to their field of study. The course also aims to facilitate reading comprehension in respective areas, to foster active utilization of the English language and to develop translation skills. Conversations within the course help build cross-language communication skills based on awareness of lexical, terminological, grammatical and stylistic relations.

  • 1. Introduction. Characterology of English. English-speaking countries. Nations and nationalities, languages in Europe and worldwide.
    2. Phonetics, morphology and syntax of the English language. Variants of English. Grammar revision.
    3. Vocabulary nad its layers. Anglicisms. New words. General and field-specific dictionaries.
    4. Terminology. Terms and their properties.
    5. Text and speech. Types of text and discourse. Functional styles.
    6. English specialized texts, their structure and grammar.
    7. Basic economic terms I. Macroeconomics. Markets and economy.
    8. Basic economic terms II. Microeconomics.
    9. Employment, unemployment, professions. Poverty.
    10. Finance, public finance, budgets, banks. Currencies. Taxation.
    11. Business and enterprising. Companies. Marketing. Advertising.
    12. Competition. Public procurement. Subsidies. Fund-raising.
    13. Revision (characterology of English, terminology, economic terms). Working with a text.

Presentation and translation of an assigned text (2 pages). Credit test (written) - summative credit test based on topics presented in seminars (at least 70 % of correct answers).
