Course objectives
The course goal consists in familiarizing the students with basic signs of neurological diseases, diagnostic methods and diseases of nervous system. The course describes individual signs, diagnostic methods and diseases of nervous system. After passing the course, the students will be well versed in the issue of nursing care for patients in neurology; they will be able to correctly assess and diagnose problems of neurological patients and subsequently make correct nursing diagnoses and plan care for neurological patients.
Syllabus
  • 1. Health support and prevention of neurological diseases.
    2. Basic neurological examination, neurological diagnostic procedures and tests, symptomatology of neurological diseases.
    3. Seizure disease - partial, generalized seizures, epileptic condition.
    4. Degenerative diseases - Parkinson, Huntington and Alzheimer disease.
    5. Cerebrovascular diseases - CMP, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoidal bleeding.
    6. Inflammatory and infectious diseases - meningitis, encephalitis.
    7. Autoimmune diseases - multiple sclerosis, Guillan-Barré syndrome, myasthenia gravis.
    8. Nervous system tumours - brain and spinal cord tumours.
    9. Diseases of peripheral and cranial nerves - trigeminus neuralgia, facial nerve paralysis.
    10. Headaches.
    11. Disturbances of consciousness.

80% attendance at practical sessions (the teacher can specify substitutive way of fulfilment of study duties to students who cannot attend compulsory lessons for serious reasons)
Credit requirement: written test, cut-off score: 80 %.
Exam requirement: Oral exam.
The contact instruction is implemented through the system of tutorials on selected topics. The combined part of the studies is implemented in the e-learning course environment at e-portal http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. The students have study supports including correspondence tasks available for instruction there. The course is concluded by a credit in written or oral form; within it, the student will demonstrate knowledge of basic and recommended reading and be able to discuss the processed correspondence tasks. The student will have opportunity to consult individually the topics studied, through individual or group tutorials or electronic mail.
