Course objectives
The course is designed as theoretical course. It extends medical knowledge needed for clinical nursing. Emphasis is put on preventive care for hearing and on prevention of serious hearing impairment. Furthermore, the course familiarizes with selected clinical conditions and differences of multidisciplinary care for patients with hearing disorders and hearing organ diseases within secondary and tertiary health care.
Syllabus
  • 1. Primary care: Health support and prevention of ORL handicap, basic ORL examination. Secondary care: Diagnostic procedures and tests in ORL. Tertiary care, its organization and services according to the needs of ORL patients.
    2. External ear diseases (infections, tumours, traumas). Middle ear diseases (infections, congenital defects, degenerative changes, traumas). Inner ear diseases (infections, tumours, degenerative changes, movement and balance disorders, Méni?re's syndrome).
    3. Loss of hearing (causes, therapeutic aids, cochlear implants, communication with patient with hearing handicap, social impact of hearing defect). Nose and nasal cavities diseases (rhinitis, polyps, foreign bodies, epistaxis, traumas, sinusitis).
    4. Larynx diseases (laryngitis, tumours, total laryngectomy, rehabilitation and training of communication after laryngectomy, oesophageal speech). Throat diseases (pharyngitis, diphteria, tonsilitis, adenotonsilectomia, epiglotitis, foreign body in upper air passages, peripheral sleep apnea).
    5. NP (nursing process) for patient / client with external and middle ear disease.
    6. NP for patient / client with hearing handicap.
    7. NP for patient / client with larynx disease.
    8. NP for patient / client with throat disease. NP for patient / client with dysphagia.

Teacher's information
The contact instruction is implemented through the system of tutorials on selected topics. The combined part of the studies is implemented in the e-learning course environment at e-portal http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. The students have study supports including correspondence tasks available for instruction there. The course is concluded by a credit in written or oral form; within it, the student will demonstrate knowledge of basic and recommended reading and be able to discuss the processed correspondence tasks. The student will have opportunity to consult individually the topics studied, through individual or group tutorials or electronic mail.
Credit requirements: 80% attendance to seminars (the teacher will specify substitutive way of fulfilment of study duties to students who could not attend compulsory lessons for serious reasons).
Credit requirement: written test 'cut-off score: 80%).
