Course objectives
The course provides knowledge in the discipline of sociology of childhood and child. It delineates the social perspective on the issue of education, social functions of education, and on subjects and objects of education from the sociological point of view. It focuses on the social determinants which play key roles in shaping the individual. Furthermore, the course provides theoretical insight into family education, family relationships, family functioning and to problems occurring in the family, as well as in other educational environments.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge:
- students are familiar with the basic terminology used in the discipline
- students acquire knowledge of the definition of the discipline of upbringing, education and related disciplines
- students obtain knowledge of sociological approaches to the interpretation of the influence of family background
- students are familiar with societal context in the discipline of education
- students obtain knowledge of psychosocial influences on the development of a child
- students gain knowledge of the functions of family and marriage and of the objectives of family upbringing
Professional skills:
- students can describe relations to the issues of negative phenomena and their influence in the family and at school
- students can describe turning points in life stages of human beings and his socialization
- students can describe the typology of educational environments affecting the development of a child
- students will obtain knowledge of socialization of pupils in the school environment, enumeration of school functions
General qualification:
- students acquire the skills to write conspecti of expert sources from specified thematically linked literature
Syllabus
  • 1. Definition of sociology of childhood and child and its interdisciplinarity.
  • 2. Family, typology, models, family patterns and communication systems (changes in the family in history).
  • 3. Demographic characteristics of families, of their forms and modalities (classical and modern family theories).
  • 4. Family effects, styles and models in the context of intergenerational learning (Czech family) .
  • 5. Social exclusion, socially excluded families and their causal factors (family as a cornerstone of social inequality).
  • 6. Syndromes deriving from the incorrect family influence (parents, child and socialization in the family).
  • 7. Social deviance and social pathology in family patterns (parents, child and socialization in the family).
  • 8. Typology of non-family educational environments and their interaconnectedness with the family and school (divorce and remarriage).
  • 9. Institutional education and institutional care (child outside the family, the role of school and peer groups in socialization).
  • 10. Vulnerable children and system of care of them (parents, child and socialization in the family).
  • 11. Interethnic families, identity and identification, family affiliation (family as a cornerstone of social inequality).
  • 12. Ethnically different children in the Czech school system.

Personal contact in teaching, consulting hours. During continuous study, the student uses the study support and processes selected correspondence tasks. Here he will also demonstrate knowledge of compulsory literature and contact teaching lectures. The student will be able to continuously consult individually studied topics of the subject through e-mail, individual or group consultations.
