Course objectives
The content of the course offers a deeper theoretical background for the solved issues at the plane of the relevant educational level which is related to the current and generally valid social tendencies of the global context.It builds on the knowledge, skills and relevant competences already acquired by completing a bachelor's degree.Its content reflects the variability of multicultural theoretical concepts, including their content and objectives.However, it focuses on attitude constructs, their changes, the factors of these changes and other determinants that enter into communication situations with people from different socio-cultural backgrounds.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge • Having completed the course, students can: describe various concepts and theories of pluralism and multiculturalism, including navigating in basic terminology, critically evaluating the growing cultural diversity and its impact on contemporary societies and individuals, analyzing and evaluating the phenomenon of multiculturalism in domestic, European and world contexts, and interpreting pluralism and multiculturalism against the background of post-modern ethical discourse.They can analyze the key problems of the phenomenon in question from the perspective of nation states and international relations alike, and thus affect their mutual ties and social conditionality.Students know key strategic and conceptual documents guaranteeing institutional stability, democracy in the rule of law and governing respect for human rights and respect for minorities. • Professional Skills • Students can independently find, critically evaluate and sort relevant facts from literary and other sources, they can use recognized methods of the studied field to describe, analyze and evaluate the basic trends of socio-cultural, social and economic development.They can lay out the nature of key societal problems and their impacts on state stability, democracy, human rights, and respect for minorities.They can also independently process critical discourse analysis on a given topic and interpret its factographic framework. • General Qualification • Knowledge of basic problems and social approaches.Having completed the course, students are well versed in the processes of formation of attitudes, stereotypes, and opinions, they can navigate valid strategic and conceptual documents, they know and understand their material relevance.They can apply the acquired knowledge and skills mainly in communication situations in the context of the degree programme studied.

  • 1. Multiculturalism in main and related notions. • 2. The issue of social diversification of minorities.Classification of minorities and their interpretative criteria.Representation of minority cultures in the Czech Republic. • 3. Anthropology of “races”, ethnic and national minorities. • 4. Socio-cultural connection with minorities in the Czech Republic and Europe. • 5. Basic legislative framework of national and transnational level governing minority issues. • 6. Multiculturalism as a pedagogical problem. • 7. Summary of factors creating a multicultural approach in social problems solving • 8. Determinants of xenophobia and racism or how to combat xenophobia and racism effectively. • 9. Overt and covert factors of psychological patterns of stereotypes, prejudices and opinions. • 10. Selected areas of quality of life of minorities and their limits. • 11. Social representation and social identity. • 12. Revision of curriculum.Group discussion and analysis of case reports on “Tolerance of difference”.

Assessment methods
• Study of recommended literary sources, strategic and conceptual documents, including selected case studies on the subject. The course is completed in a combined form, i.e.:1) by elaborating a critical discourse analysis on a predetermined topic in the range of 5 - 10 standard pages and its presentation, in which the student proves the required knowledge of and orientation in the subject matter, and 2) written verification of knowledge in the form of a final test.
