Course objectives
The goal of the subject is to develop students´ linguistic, communicative, socio-cultural and intercultural skills as a preparation for student´s and professional mobilities during which students can face misunderstandings, conflicts, problems with adaptation to target cultures and various stereotypes and prejudice. The students will be able to use their skills on their future job positions in public sector institutions and in social work. The main output of the course in creating of a portfolio comprising documents related to the recruitment procedure, including self-reflection evaluation as the basis for the design of an own case study and its presentation.

  • 1. Introduction to the course. Requirements.
    I. SOCIO-CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE
    2. EU. Communication in the EU. Language and social interaction. Lingua franca. Politeness theory. Pragmatics.
    3. Culture values and theory of cultures. Hofstede´s division of cultures. Trompenaar´s dimensions.
    4. Adaptation to target culture. Acculturation. acculturation models. Culture shock. Overcoming culture shock.
    5. Stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination. Reasons for creating stereotypes. Prejudice in Europe. Discrimination in history and nowadays.
    II. PLACEMENT AND CAREER PLAN
    6. Recruitment proces. Preparation for a job interview. Confusing questions.
    7. Documents connected with recruitment. CV and cover letter. Content and structure.
    8. Intercultural team management. Specifics of working in a multicultural team. International business styles.
    9. International negotiating. Steps in the process of negotiating. Culture specifics. Gift giving.
    10. Creating of a case study. Elaborating the text. Presenting it to other students with the following analysis.
    11. Public speaking. Preparing a presentation. Content and structure.
    12. Student´s presentations. Evaluating and analysing the performance of students.
    13. Revision for the exam. Evaluating the course.

Combined exam: Presentation of a case study (5%). Creating a portfolio of documents (20%). Presentation of a chosen topic from the course by students (25%). Credit test (50%) + 70% participation in seminars.
