The objective of this course is to provide the student with a understanding how financial institutions and financial instruments develop as solutions to problems and as responses to profit opportunities. This course follows the basic course Money and Financial Markets.

    1. Financial Institutions
    Role of financial intermediaries. Maturity intermediation, reducing risk via diversifikation, reducing transaction costs, providing a payments mechanism.
    2. Financial Innovation
    Categorizations of financial innovation. Motivation for financial innovation.
    3. Commercial Banks
    Bank services, funding, regulation.
    4. Insurance Companies
    Life insurance companies, nature of business, investments, regulations. Property and casualty insurance companies, nature of business, investments, regulations. Financial trends in the international insurance industry.
    5. Organization and Structure of Markets
    Primary markets and the underwriting of securities. Functions of secondary markets.
    6. Treasury and Agency Securities Markets
    Treasury securities. Federal agency securities. Municipal securities, types and features.
    7. Markets for Corporate Securities
    Common stock markets, stock exchanges and over-the-counter market. Markets for corporate senior instruments, commercial papers, corporate bonds.
    8. Markets for Bank Instruments
    Bank obligations. Bankers acceptances. The mortgage market, development of the secondary mortgage market, mortgage pass-through securities.
