The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
Course objectives: Level B 1.2 intermediate The aim of the course is to revise and enlarge knowledge of grammatical and lexical systems of English and their use in English for professionals on intermediate level especially in professional situations and business as well as to introduce the students to the system of English in the above mentioned situations by using interesting, professional, practical and up-to-date texts for listening and reading. To show them the principles of vocabulary formation and lexis developing. To lead the students to conscious and purposeful language usage in common and professional communication from both aspects of fluency and grammatical correctness.

  • 1. Bridging the cultural gap
    Grammar: Modal verbs. Reading: City descriptions file. Listening: recorded
    information
    2. International outsourcing
    Reading: Indians learn to be Brad and Britney. Giving talks and presentations - communication skills at work. Listening: signposting language
    3. On a global scale
    Grammar: Present Continuous, be going to + infinitive, will + infinitive. Vocabulary:
    Money and finance file, collocations.
    4. Planning an event
    Reading: Hosting a major event. Listening: Types of business communication. Review (unit 5-8)
    5. What if?
    Grammar: time clauses, 1st and 2nd Conditionals, expressing probability. Listening
    6. Urban Living
    Vocabulary: Phrasal verbs, Dictionary skills. Reading: Living in a shop window.
    7. Job descriptions
    Vocabulary: Jobs descriptions, Collocations, word- building. Reading: Getting your ideal job.
    8. Transitions
    Grammar: Present Perfect Simple, Present Simple Continuous. Listening:
    Describing a process, Interviewing techniques
    9. Cultural differences
    Reading: Culture file. Listening: A tough choice. Vocabulary: Confusing words, Dictionary skills.
    10. Critical Incidents
    Grammar: 3rd Conditional, Should have (done) / shouldn't have (done).
    Writing: Business correspondence.
    11. Hard news, soft news
    Grammar: Reported Speech, collocations. Listening: news and views, social responses, common expressions.
    Reading: The gameboy generation.
    12. Politics and current affairs
    Listening: social responses. Common expressions. Review (units 8-12)
    13. Revision
    Summary of all the grammar and vocabulary discussed during the term.

Requirements:
The course is completed by a course-credit through an ongoing written or oral tests and a final credit test. Students have the possibility to gain up to 100 points as maximum, whereas to gain the course-credit they must achieve at least 60 points. Students who repeat this part of the language do not have the obligation of 60% attendance.
