Course objectives
In these lectures the thermodynamic principles are derived, as far as possible, from the principles of quantum mechanics of many particle systems, and the students are introduced to the basics of statistical physics.
Syllabus
  • Phase space, Hilbert space, distribution function, density matrix, Liouville equation.
Second quantization and the Fock space, ideal and non-ideal quantum gases, two-particle interaction.
Microcanonical, Gibbas canonical and macrocanonical ensembles, statistics of open systems.
The main thermodynamic theorems and their consequences, thermodynamic potentials, Maxwell relations, thermodynamic processes.
Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics: Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, the width of spectral lines, equipartition theorem and the heat capacity, one-and diatomic ideal gas, relation between quantum and classical statistical physics, Gibbs paradox, paramagnetism and ferromagnetism.
Entropy and information: Entropy and its properties, Maxwell's demon, the link between thermodynamics and information theory, quantum computing.
Heat capacity of solids: the Dulong - Petit law, the Einstein model, the Debye
    crystal model.
Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac distributions, Bose-Einstein condensation of a bosonic gas,
black body radiation, and ideal degenerate fermionic gas. Fluctuations of energy and of the number of particles; fluctuations of thermodynamic quantities.
