My flatmate was determined to put up shelves in our new flat by himself. 0 B He watched some YouTube videos,
decided he knew what to do and turned down all offers of help. 1 The shelves looked very nice – for about half
an hour. Then they collapsed dramatically, scattering books and CDs onto the floor with a loud crash. I heard him
soon afterwards on the phone, "Hi Dad, could you come over?"
Molly, 30, Glasgow
So I'm having a party in my flat and someone has spilt some red wine on the white carpet near the sofa. Luckily, I
remember reading somewhere that you can use white wine to remove a red wine stain. I grab a bottle of white and
pour some all over the stain. I carefully take a new cotton cloth and press it over the wet carpet. 2 To my horror,
when I lift up the cloth, I find that the carpet is now actually coloured blue from the cloth! What a waste of time
and money – professional carpet cleaners don't come cheap.

I was putting a new door on my girlfriend's walk-in wardrobe and I had to work from inside the cupboard. 3 I
finished off, attached the handle and it all looked really good. The problem came when I wanted to open the door
outwards and step out into the bedroom. I had forgotten that there were pieces of wood nailed across the door and
the frame to keep it shut when it was delivered. 4 I didn't want to damage the frame or undo my hard work and
take out all my screws. The only thing I could do was phone my friend Paul. He had to come round with his tool
box and take the pieces of wood off the outside to let me out. It was fairly embarrassing, even if my DIY was
actually very good.
Emma, 21, Birmingham
This is one of many DIY nightmare stories about my mum's brother, Uncle Rob. 5 When Uncle Rob came to
do some painting upstairs, I had just got a new kitten called Lulu. Mum said I had to shut Lulu away downstairs
but I just forgot. So my uncle was half way around painting my room when Lulu sprang down from the top of the
wardrobe. She landed with all four paws in the paint tray and instantly leapt out again and ran down the stairs. You
can imagine the shock on Rob's face and the damage on the carpet. The little cat prints were so perfect though, I
tried to convince mum she needn't clean them up in my room because they looked so cute. It didn't work and she
made me do the cleaning instead!
A That was fine because there's a light in there so I could see very well.
B This was despite never having done anything like it before.
C Nevertheless, sometimes you just have to admit you've made a mistake.
D I think "I mustn't rub it because it will push the stain into the carpet" so I wait patiently for a
moment.
E Basically, I had trapped myself in the cupboard.
F All I can say is that he learned a valuable lesson.
G I have to confess this one wasn't actually his fault but mine. 10
