LF Aligner - Pulling Translation Memories out of Thin Air

(Final Project: Milestone 1)

Documents of already translated texts can be used to help you in becoming an expert in translating documents on a specific topic. This means, that you can align the already translated source documents with their translations in software application called LF Aligner available at:

Steps to follow:

i - Download the bundle from the link above and extract it in your download folder.

ii - Open the folder titled "Aligner" and double click the only application file titled "LF_aligner_4.25" (the only application file with the camel icon).

iii - Select the 5th option "EU legislation by CELEX number (...)" and confirm by clicking "Next".

iv - Click the "Browse" button and navigate to where you wish to save the resulting set of aligned files.

v - Select your (source) language 1 (English) and your target language 2 (Czech).

vi - Look up a document on a topic of your choice in the European Legislation Portal EurLex at:

and enter a CELEX number in the field provided.

vii - Once you confirm, the application will do its magic and within several seconds a window summarising the result of automatic alignment will pop up. The suggested type of output is preselected and you are prompted to confirm.

viii - In the next dialog window the recommended options are "Generate an xls and open it for reviewing" in tandem with ticking the "Generate xls in background after review". Confirm by clicking "Next" and wait for the result to pop up, and review it briefly. Afterwards, confirm the preselection option regarding generating a TMX file.

The final step is to correct the language codes to "en" for English and "cs" for Czech.

ix - In the end a window with information on the alignment appears prompting you to click "Ok".

The alignment result, i.e. the aligned translation is available in the designated folder (see step iii) in excel and TMX formats.
