Předmět se soustřeďuje na vývoj anglické literatury od  počátků anglosaského písemnictví do současnosti a podává historický přehled vývoje anglicky psané literatury ve Velké Británii. Úkolem je přiblížit studentům kombinované formy studia významná díla anglicky psané literatury literatury především z hlediska praktického. Důraz je tedy kladen na četbu a práci s konkrétními texty, jejíž součástí je textová analýza a její interpretace v kontextu britské literatury a kultury jako celku. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována pokusu definovat specifika anglicky psané literatury, jejím inspiračním zdrojům a proměnám kulturních a literárních kontextů, v nichž vznikala.

Old Anglo-Saxon literature, also known as Old English literature, refers to the body of written works produced in Old English between the 7th and 11th centuries in what is now England. This period extends from the early settlements of the Anglo-Saxons to the Norman Conquest in 1066. The literature of this era is diverse and includes poetry, prose, religious texts, legal documents, and historical records.
