Course objectives
The seminar will equip students with the necessary skills for a successful completion of their academic studies. As the university environment differs largely from the high school environment, the first-year students are exposed to high levels of stress resulting from new requirenments and short deadlines. The stress levels can be substantially lowered, though, if the students acquire relevant attitudes and methods of more efficient study. Via instruction and independent project work, the students will become familiar with the basic principles of work organization within university studies, such as preparation planning, time management and note-taking. The course will also focus on the development of such necessary academic skills as information processing, work with resources and citation norms.

Syllabus
  • 1. University environment: the nature of academic work, requirements and expectations. 2. Essentials of work and time management. 3. Methods and techniques of efficient study. 4. Efficient note-taking and organization of notes. 5. Essentials of working with note-taking and note-organizing software(MS OneNote, Google Keep, Evernote). Assignment 1: Creating a note based on reading an English-language book in a selected software. 6. Useful study materials and resources for university students of English. 7. Information sources, critical approach to their selection. 8. Reading, work with text and information. 9. Notes apparatus, quotations and citation norms. 10. References and bibliographies. 11. Plagiarism and how to prevent it. 12. Writing essays: style, content, technicalities. 13. Writing essays: structure and textual coherence, linguistic devices (expressions, phrases, turns of phrase) to strengthen it. Assignment 2: Essay in English on a set theme at an agreed length.
