- Course objectives
- History of the Czech cinema since 1945 up to now. The course is concerned with selected periods, genres and themes of the history of Czech cinema. Students will be shown the key Czech films since 1945 up to now. The projection will be accompanied by analysis.
- Syllabus
- The lecture:
1. The nationalization of Czech cinema and film development in 1945-1948.
2. Czech cinema during the Stalinist era (1948-1956). The first postwar generation: Václav Krška, Jiří Weiss, Jiří Krejčík, Alfred Radok.
3. Czech cinema after 1956. The second postwar generation: Jan Kadár, Elmar Klos, Karel Kachyňa, Vojtěch Jasný, František Vláčil, Ladislav Helge.
4. The new film and the Czechoslovak New Wave. The third postwar generation: Věra Chytilová, Miloš Forman, Ivan Passer, Jiří Menzel, Jan Němec, Pavel Juráček, Evald Schorm, Juraj Herz, Jaromil Jireš.
5. Another major film makers of Czechoslovak cinema in the 1960s. Genres of Czechoslovak cinema in the 1960s.
6. Literature and film in the 1960s.
7. Czech cinema during the normalization period (1970-1989).
8. Czech cinema after 1989.
9. Czech documentary film.
10. Personalities of Czech animated film.
The seminar will consist of a screening and discussion of the film.

2. The decade of the 1950s in Czech cinema.
3. Czechoslovak New Wave.
4. Perličky na dně (Pearls of the Deep) and individual director's personalities.
5. Pavel Juráček - director and screenwriter.
6. The relationship between literature and film: Lustig - Němec, Fuks - Herz, Menzel - Hrabal, Milan Kundera.
7. Allegorical film.
8. Slovak directors: Juraj Jakubisko Elo Havetta, Dušan Hanák.
9. The animated film. Jan Švankmajer.
