Course objectives
The structure of the course contains an explanation of the basic concepts of information services of digital libraries. It covers the historical circumstances of the origin of digital libraries, examples of the first digital libraries, the definition of the digital library, the sectors that make up the digital library, technical protocols, standards and systems for creating digital libraries. It includes acquaintance with metadata and their application in digital libraries. The content of the seminar is based on and follows the content of the lecture of the Digital Library.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- identify and summarize basic developments in the field of digital libraries;
- identify and describe current trends in the development of digital libraries;
- prepare a brief overview of technical, technological and economic aspects of digital libraries;
- describe the structural elements of the digital library architecture;
- practically search for and use some digital libraries in the Czech Republic and abroad.

  • Introduction to the issue - defining the basic milestones of ICT development, defining terms, related areas and working definition of the digital library
  • Time frame of digital library development, activities and functions of current digital libraries
  • Architecture of digital libraries, typology of digital objects (resources), identifiers and systems for their administration and management, classical library identifiers
  • Metadata - typology, characteristics, use
  • Interoperability - principles, protocols, application
  • Digital library programs and projects - examples and demonstrations of functioning digital libraries in the Internet environment
