Course objectives
Students will get acquainted with professional librarian English and terminology. The seminar will be concentrated on working with English texts (books, magazines, web sites). Students will translate the texts and also create professional texts. Not only will they learn speaking and articulating correctly, but also writing will be highlighted. In addition, students will learn using English language for all intents and purposes based on specific examples (e. g. American public librarianship). The subject is focused on fixing the passive knowledge of English language and on ability to work with foreign language texts, but most importantly on professional terminology in the field of librarianship and information work. The seminar systematically extends professional librarian terminology knowledge and its real usage for professional publications and articles translation. Materials of information study and librarian field, English written professional magazines, British press articles and journals published in other English speaking countries, expert annotations and papers constitute the basis of the seminar. Revision and fixing of grammatical features is an inevitable part of the seminar. The subject might be studied in a distant way during the Erasmus-Sokrates project, but it is necessary do discuss it with the teacher at ÚBK (Department of Czech Studies and Librarianship).
