Course objectives
Lectures reflect history of the theatre in Baroque, Classicism, Enlightenment and Romantism. Attention will be focused on both the aesthetic and philosophical conception of theatre and drama in different style periods, but also the development of forms of staging, set design and acting. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the history of world theatre in a variety of historical and cultural context Students should have a broad understanding of the dramatic forms and theatre conventions.
Syllabus
  • 1. Baroque theatre and drama description a main characteristics. Types of baroque theatre (court theatre, common schools, religious congregations Jesuit theatre, peasant theatre) and its stage forms. German baroque theatre: carnival plays, Meistersingers and the wandering players (Hans Sachs), Haupt-und Staatsaktion ("chief and state plays"). Baroque theatre in Italy and Spain.
    2. French baroque theatre and drama (17th century Classicism). Nicolas Boileau and his The Art of Poetry (L'Art poétique, 1674) - the poetical canon of french classicism. Playwrights: Corneille, Moliere, Racine. Scenic design and his changes: proscenium arch stage. The birth and development of French opera and ballet.
    3. The enlightenment in France: impact on theatre drama genres. Denis Diderot, Voltaire, Paul Marivaux, Pierre Beaumarchais.
    4. The enlightenment in Italy in 18th century: position of theatre. The chief representatives of drama: Carlo Goldoni, Carlo Gozzi.
    5. English Theatre (1642-1800) - theatre from restoration through romanticism. Acting companies, famous actors, theatres. Drama genres, the chief representatives: John Dryden, John Gay, sentimental comedy, Richard Steel, Joseph Addison, Henry Fielding, Oliver Goldsmith, Richard B. Sheridan.
    6. The enlightenment in Germany - enlightenment reform of the German theatre: J. Chr. Gottsched, Carolina Neuber, G. E. Lessing - Hamburgische Dramaturgie (Hamburg Dramaturgy). Weimar Classicism. Proto-Romantic movement - Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress). J. W. Goethe, Friedrich Schiller. Heinrich von Kleist.
    7. Romanticism in the theatre. Early romantic theory (brothers Schlegel). German romantic drama (H. Kleist, G. Büchner e.g.). British romantic Drama (G. G. Byron, P. B. Shelley). Famous english actors (D. Garrick, E. Kean, Ch. Macready).
    8. French romantic drama: A. Dumas (father), V. Hugo, A.de Musset, A.de Vigny. Russian romantic theatre and drama: A. S. Gribojedov, A. S. Puškin, M. J. Lermontov. Polish romantic theatre and drama: Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki). Folk theatre in Vienna: F. Raimund, J. N. Nestroy. Scenic design and his changes.
