Course objectives
The aim of this class is to open some insights into the state(s), cultural life and society of the Germans from a historical viewpoint. The main focus lies on symbols, ideas, and crucial intersections of social and cultural life, in short 'lieux de mémoire'. The changes in their interpretation during different periods of history should - at least in principle - be reconstructed. In this way, basic knowledge about German history and nowaday's Germany shall be made accessible to the students in order to show around which crucial issues German public life is revolving again and again.
Syllabus
  • Four subjects from each of the fields ?everyday life', ?history', and 'cultural life' will be selected, as may be changed in the following academical year, e.g.: 1. The Berlin Wall, the 'Weißwurstäquator': What is or has been separating the Germans. 2. The cultural memory of the Germans and its paradoxies. 3.
