- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to make students acquainted with the physical aspects (not only) digital photography, with an emphasis on computer processing. The course is divided into two parts. In the first part (syllabus points 1-4), students learn about the physical principles of light, its sources, propagation and detection, especially with CCD and CMOS sensors. In the second part (syllabus points 5-10), students learn the basic technical and optical notions of digital photography, computer processing, color management, scanning, and work with selected programs for editing digital photos.
- Syllabus
- 1. Light sources: wave and quantum properties of light, electromagnetic spectrum, characteristics of light, radiometry and photometry, spectra of various natural and artificial sources.
2. Light propagation and interaction with objects: geometric optics, wave optics, polarization, applications in photography.
3. Detection of Light I - human eye: properties, theory of color vision, trichromacy, tristimulus, metamerism, additive and subtractive mixing of colors, optical illusions.
4. Light Detection II - photographic film, CCD chips, CMOS: physical principles, use, characteristics, sampling in space and time (video), aliasing.
5. Digital Photography: image resolution, pixels, DPI, light, exposure, aperture, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, sensitivity of the chip, compression.
6. Scanning: image resolution, pixels, DPI, optical density, color models CMYK, RGB, principles of proper scanning, settings of the histogram and curve, restoration of an image using digital ICE, selecting the proper size of the scanned image.
7. Working with Adobe Photoshop and Gimp: open, save, export, conversion, resizing, image transformation, linearity alignment, curves, histograms, brightness and contrast, color balance, channel mixing, working with channels, layers and selections, clipping paths and masks, working with text, basic filters.
8. Advanced photo editing techniques: coloring and bleaching, color replacement, retouching, combining images, special effects.
9. Color management: color models, ICC color management, monitor calibration.
10. Content of practical exercises: using knowledge acquired, students will edit photos and apply various techniques and effects.
The points 1-4 include real demonstration of some phenomena in the laboratory as well as in terrain.

- Teacher's information
- To obtain the credit student (a) prepares an essay on a given subject (to be entered into half of the semester in the range of 1-4 points of the syllabus with regard to the individual focus of the student), which will focus on the qualitative level on some physical principle which is used in digital photography. Essay will be completed by practical examples. For example, an essay on the theme of light polarization to be completed digital photographs demonstrating the effect of polarizing filters (b) takes the oral discussion in which he/she proves his/her theoretical knowledge and ability to solve given practical tasks in the range of points 5-10 of the syllabus.
