Course objectives
The aim of the course is a thorough acquaintance of students with the issue of preventive conservation with a focus on the specifics of protection of artefacts and naturfacts in museums and cultural heritage. Students will bring home the basic concepts in the field of conservation and restoration, ethical standards, system preservation and restoration of museum collections in the Czech Republic, specialized departments and legislation. Furthermore, attention will be paid to the specifics of remedial and preventive conservation, principles of occupational health with collections, monitoring microclimate conditions in the interiors and their regulation, general principles of inorganic and organic materials presented in museums, galleries and archives collections, rescue organization during natural disasters, the principles of care the presentation of the collections, depositing and transport, protection of collections using substitutes, particularly digitization and finally evaluating the effectiveness of the activities carried out. It will be accentuated for all themes by the principles of preventive conservation during daily handling of the collections. Students will check their knowledge in practice in the Centre of restoration and conservation UHV.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: - perceive the key role of preventive conservation in the protection of collections in a modern museum; - perceive the relevant legislation, know professional sources and important professional workplaces; - learn the basics of monitoring and regulation: - temperature and humidity; optical radiation; solid, liquid and gaseous pollutants; biological attack on materials; human activity; - will be able to effectively participate in the protection of collections during presentation, disposal and transport. - will understand the specifics of preventive protection of collection objects according to their material nature I. - acquire basic knowledge in the field of protection of collections in crisis situations. - get acquainted with the use of substitutes as a possibility of partial protection of collection objects. - acquire the ability to evaluate the effectiveness of PK in the museum.

  • 1. The role of preventive conservation in the protection of collections in a modern museum. Ethical standards. 2. Current legislation. Basic professional literature. History of the Prev.Cons. Professional associations and important workplaces in the Czech Republic. Health protection when working with collections 3. Effects of temperature and humidity on materials 4. Effects of optical radiation on materials 5. Effects of solid, liquid and gaseous pollutants on materials 6. Causes and consequences of biological attack of materials. Human action. 7. Protection of collections during presentation, disposal and transport. 8. Specifics of preventive protection of collection objects according to their material nature I. 9. Specifics of preventive protection of collection objects according to their material nature II. 10. Protection of collections in crisis situations. 11. Use of substitutes as a possibility of partial protection of collection objects. Specifics of using real and virtual copies. 12. Indicators and evaluation of PC effectiveness in the museum.
