Course objectives
The course introduces selected Western European countries and their main tourist destinations, key attractions and major monuments in English. After a brief presentation of each country, a brief description of its main tourist attractions, i.e. landscapes and natural beauties, typical regions and the most popular tourist destinations, follows. The main focus is on monuments and sites that have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to their exceptional universal significance, integrity and authenticity, outstanding architectural or natural value and remarkable quality. Each of these sites is briefly introduced and described. They all represent important evidence of the historical development of the country, its society, its lifestyle and its social environment from the earliest times to the present day. Such monuments are examples of human creativity and exceptional testimony to cultural traditions and cultures. Students will be presented not only with significant examples of traditional human settlements, architectural and historical monuments, and human interaction with environment, but also with unique natural phenomena, areas of outstanding natural beauty and aesthetic significance. At the same time, their language skills will be purposefully broadened and deepened, especially in the area of comprehension of foreign language oral expression and readings.

  • 1. Introduction, basic terminology, literature, information sources.
  • 2. Portugal, the country of green mountains, golden beaches, historic palaces and castles, museums and monasteries, old-fashioned traditions and wine.
  • 3. – 4. Spain, the country of nature, rural and cultural tourism abundant historic, cultural and architectural sites.
  • 5. – 6. Italy, the cradle of European civilization and country of world most iconic images and countless monuments.
  • 7. – 8. France, the country of world-famous historical monuments, cultural events, farming and gastronomy.
  • 9. – 10. Great Britain, the country of magnificent cathedrals, impressive castles, picturesque towns and villages.
  • 11. Ireland, the emerald island of long and rich history.
  • 12. Germany, the country of magnificent museums and galleries, home to great works of architecture.
  • 13. Austria, the country of numerous architectural monuments, cultural events and café tradition.
