Course objectives
The subject aims at familiarizing the student with key terminology in rehabilitation, occupational therapy and physical therapy, explaining the concepts. Knowledge of the latter concepts is necessary for providing complex care to clients/patients. ADL (activity of daily living) training can significantly enhance the client/patient´s quality of life.
Syllabus
  • 1. Occupational therapy, physical therapy, rehabilitation - key terms, definitions.
    2. The importance of occupational therapy in complex client/patient care.
    3. Occupational therapy in children, adults and the elderly - basic information.
    4. The importance of ADLs (Activities of Daily Living).
    5. Adapting the environment for persons with combined disabilities.
    6. Adapting the environment in the households of paraplegics. Adapting the environment in selected diagnoses.
    7. Practical training in wheelchair use indoors and outdoors.

Teacher's information
Contact hours are based on consultation of selected topics. Non-contact hours are realized via an e-learning environment available at http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. At the website, students can use learning materials with on-line assignments. Credits are granted upon successful completion based on a written or oral assessment where the student demonstrates knowledge of compulsory and recommended literature and discusses their on-line assignments. The student can consult the mentor concerning independently studied topics, be it in person, in group sessions or via e-mail.
Requirements for credit: written essay (5 to 7 pages), its presentation and defence.
