Course objectives
The course is designed for students' basic orientation in the issues of health-care. It enables students to acquire basic knowledge about the determining factors of health and their impact on the health condition, and about observing the rules of a healthy lifestyle. Students will become familiar with the issues of disease and changes in the social status of the patient. Part of the course is focused on the specifics of the approach to the sick and dying. Theoretical knowledge is linked to practical exercises in seminars, where students acquire the necessary skills. The acquired theoretical knowledge can be used by students in specific situations during their internship or practice in social services. Study Outcomes: Professional Knowledge: Students can explain basic concepts related to health, determining factors of health and healthy lifestyle. They can define risk factors and describe the changes which occur during disease. They are well informed on systems of care for the sick and dying. Professional Skills: Students are able to choose an appropriate approach in accordance with the current situation of the individual. General Qualification: Students are able to transmit information on protecting one's health of a healthy person, to identify the needs of a patient and pass the necessary information in a comprehensible manner. They manage both verbal and non-verbal communication in contact with the client with damaged health.

    2. Definition of health, pathogens and salutors effecting health
    3. Life style and its influence on health
    4. Psychology of health
    5. Stress, its origin, management, risk
    6. Burn-out syndrome
    7. Psychology of disease
    8. Definition of disease, phase of origin, development of disease
    9. Patient in terminal stadium, death
    10. Communication between patient and medical staff
    11. Change of role of patient and expectations of development of disease
    12. Palliative Care.

    Seminars
    The seminars will be conducted as practical exercises related to the topics of the lectures. The exercises will be focused on developing the necessary skills, particularly on risk assessment, evaluation of the changes and the development of communication skills with patients.

An essay of 4-6 pages on a topic related to healthy lifestyle or to changes associated with a disease.
The instructor will notify the students on the topics that have not been fully lectured for them to seek in the compulsory literature or at the e-learning site.
Written examination, minimum 75%.
