The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The course is focused on description of cultural specifics of central Europe, on definition of region and its qualities (geopolitical, cultural, temporal) in the range from enlightenment or Napoleon wars till World War II. The students are then presented partial topics in lectures: art culture (linear, musical, art) versus pop forms of culture and entertainment; artistic culture, political culture; aesthetic feeling between aesthetic doctrines and taste (avant-garde vs. mode); intellectual and his role in modern society and central European specifics of intellectualistic concepts; traditional, elite and mass culture opposition; academic education and constitution of modern intellectual elite cs. consumption; cultural identity and idea of nation - nationalism (internationalism and concept of modern culture; cultural aspect of socialization - enlightenment issue; institutional background of realization of cultural concepts in society - educational and social institution, libraries, newspaper and periodicals, museums, monuments etc.

  • 1. Basic concepts: concept of culture in (central) European after enlightenment tradition.
    2. Periodization of the 20th century from the point of view of cultural development
    3. Cultural centers and cultural periphery - changes and replaces, role of German and Slavic world in formation of specifics of culture of central Europe
    4. Cultural models and visually-semantic icons (cathedral, sport stadium, department store, cinema, hypermarket)
    5. East vs. West, specifics of Slavic and German feature in central European cultural, mental and intellectual situation
    6. Austria as multinational monarchy (impact of Franz Josephian era at the beginnings of the 20th century)
    7. Influences of cultural centers on central European situation in examples of Berlin and Vienna
    8. Specifics of cultural development of interwar periods: Germany, Russia, USA as models of cultural and civilization perspective of central European countries
    9. Emancipation of Slavic nations and modernity; regions and formation of local cultural traditions, idea of Czechoslovak state and its fulfillment in art culture
    10. Specifics of central European intellectualism in the 20th century
    11. Specifics of art culture of the 20th century in central Europe
    12. Specifics of pop culture of the 20th century in central Europe
