Course objectives
The course is conceived as a topically theoretical-practical unit. Students learn the most important general characteristics of microorganisms, epidemiological characteristics of contagions and their prevention, with an emphasis on the specific workplace environments of dental hygiene. Students will learn the principles of prevention of professional and nosocomial infections, they will gain detailed knowledge about the principles of proper collection and transmission of infectious material and proper disposal of biological material. They will learn about the most important microbiological laboratory examination methods.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students can define basic methods of microbiology and epidemiology with an emphasis on preventing nosocomial infections and vocational contagion and on basic understanding of the principles of prevention and management of disease groups.
Professional Skills: Students are able to navigate the clinical microbiological and immunological methods used in diagnostic processes.
General Qualification: Students can use their knowledge in the prevention of nosocomial infections and professional environments in dental offices and dental hygiene, proper handling of biological materials and basic interpretation of laboratory results.
Competences: Students perform their work experience, providing care for clients according to the latest findings in the field, complying with the principles of asepsis and antisepsis, can provide accurate and adequate information in relevant fields.
Syllabus
  • Lectures:
  • 1. Status of medical microbiology, infectious medicine and epidemiology in the system of human health. Legislation and legal provisions relating to the protection against the spread of infectious diseases.
  • 2. Relationship between macro and microorganisms and its importance in maintaining human health, or developing a disease.
  • 3. Significant bacterial agents for humans with an emphasis on the environment of the oral cavity and its surroundings.
  • 4. Significant viral agents for humans with an emphasis on the oral cavity and its surroundings.
  • 5. Features and categorization of infections by agents of their origin.
  • 6. Hospital infections.
  • 7. Vocational contagion. Viral hepatitis, other viral diseases and their significance in healthcare.
  • 8. Main sources of the spread of infectious agents in hospitals and institutions ensuring care of humans.
  • 9. Estimation of the risk of exposure to infectious agents to the state of health of the human population.
  • Training:
  • 1. Basic knowledge of epidemiology, clinical studies, evidence-based medicine.
  • 2. Methods of prevention and control of infectious disease groups.
  • 3. Methods of antisepsis.
  • 4. Methods of antisepsis, decontamination.
  • 5. Disinfection.
  • 6. Sterilization.

Assessment methods
Credit requirements: 80% attendance at the training (students who could not attend compulsory instruction for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative way of fulfilling their study requirements). Credit test min. 80 % success rate.
Examination: written, at least 80% success rate.
