Course objectives
The course focuses on ethical and philosophical questions of performing non-medical healthcare vocations. It introduces to the integration of ethical principles to ethical codes and addresses ethical dilemmas of healthcare professionals dealing with clients. It provides a brief overview of the development of ethical and philosophical thinking and an overview of the current main ethical concepts. Ethical dilemmas in midwifery.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students know the basic concepts, approaches and theories of ethics and related philosophical disciplines and can define and explain them orally and in writing.
Professional Skills: Students can use existing ethical approaches to solve model and real situations and they are able to reflect and comment on their decision-making processes.
General Qualification: Students are able to navigate the world of value and use critical thinking to solve ethically relevant situations.
Competences: Students are able to take care of clients responsibly and with respect to the adopted system of positive values and ethical principles in accordance with their developed conscience.
Syllabus
  • 1. Philosophical disciplines. Ontology, epistemology, axiology, ethics, aesthetics, logic, history of philosophy. Place of ethics in the system of philosophical disciplines. The subject of ethics. Overview of basic terms of philosophy, ethics, medical ethics and bioethics.
  • 2. Gnoseology, epistemology and the role of knowledge in ethics. Types of knowledge according to Carper. Truth criteria. Critical thinking.
  • 3. Historical development of philosophy, ethics and morals. Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Historical development of ethics and morality. Modern Age.
  • 4. Basic ethical approaches and theories. Deontology, consequentialism, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, ethics, social implications, pragmatic ethics.
  • 5. Ethical principles. Non-maleficience, beneficence, autonomy and others.
  • 6. Value foundations in ethics. Axiological systems and value classification.
  • 7. Medical ethics. Research subject and contemporary issues of medical ethics. Bioethics.
  • 8. Questions of beginning, course and end of life. Meaning of life. Thanatology.
  • 9. Assisted reproduction and other issues of bioethics. Ethical issues associated with the development of technology.
  • 10. Conscience, privacy, shame and psychological aspects of ethics. Helping behaviour and altruism.
  • 11. Ethical dilemmas in midwifery.
