Course objectives
The course is conceived as a theoretical one. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with problems of human nutrition with a special emphasis on the issue of nutrition of women in the preconception period, during pregnancy, after childbirth and during lactation, focusing on nutrition of newborn children under 1 year of age, as well. The course also deals medical / clinical nutrition encountered by midwifery practitioners in hospital care. The course is not focused on theoretical knowledge only but also on practical skills. Having completed the course, students will be well versed in the basic issues of nutrition of all age groups. They will be able to critically and comprehensively assess the nutritional problem, assess the situation adequately and recommend appropriate solutions.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students know the basic concepts and relations in the field of human nutrition and demonstrate this knowledge.
Professional skills: Students are able to apply the knowledge to specific cases of patients and clients. They can provide basic nutrition recommendations and have mastered techniques and methods of enteric and parenteral nutrition.
General Qualification: Students are well versed in both natural and therapeutic nutrition and the system of dietary measures. In collaboration with other health care professionals, they can assist in ensuring adequate nutritional status of a wide range of patients and of the general population.
Competences: Having completed the course, the students can provide care of adequate nutritional status of patients / clients in collaboration with a physician and provide the necessary education.
Syllabus
  • 1. Nutrition and human health, nutritional status determination.
  • 2. Food composition and its energy value. Minerals and vitamins in the diet. Energy balance management.
  • 3. (hunger, satiety). Physical activity and nutrition.
  • 4. Diets and dietary system. Adiposity. Malnutrition.
  • 5. Nutrition in childhood.
  • 6. Artificial nutrition, parenteral and enteric.
  • 7. Significance of nutrition for humans, composition of diet. Effect of chronic alcohol and drug use on nutritional status.
  • 8. Disorders of chewing, swallowing, digestion, absorption. Chronic diseases affecting food intake.
  • 9. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia.
  • 10. The risk of nutritional disorders in hospitalized patients, nutrition in oncological patients.
