Course objectives
The aim of the course is to bring to light the current trends in special education in the context of society-wide social and cultural changes. The subject includes not only theoretical regularities and information regarding current legislative and valid curricular documents, but also knowledge that is applied in current practice and relates to direct education in various social environments, in various forms and areas of the quality of life of persons with disabilities and disadvantages.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
- be able to navigate current trends in special pedagogy both here and abroad,
- know the current legislative and curricular documents valid in the Czech Republic,
- be able to explain the concept of inclusion, exclusion,
- be able to characterize the inclusive education of pupils with special educational needs – support measures,
- be able to characterize pedagogical and psychological counseling services.
Syllabus
  • Introduction to the issue of changes in the paradigms of special education. (Subtopics: action framework for the education of children and adults with special educational needs).
  • Definition of common, segregated, integrated and inclusive education. (Subtopics: definition and goals of inclusive education, myths about inclusion, principles of inclusive education).
  • Strategic and conceptual documents relating to current trends in co-education.
  • Legislative and curricular documents related to current trends in co-education (Subtopics: teamwork of the teacher, special pedagogue and assistant, school counseling workplaces).
  • Issues of equal opportunities, social equality and social justice. (Subtopics: comparison of approaches to inclusion in Czech education with current trends abroad).
  • Educational connections in the causalities of special educational needs and support measures. (Subtopics: support plan as a possibility to implement individual support).
  • Educational connections in the causes of social exclusion.
  • Educational contexts in working with a heterogeneous class. (Subtopics: risk and protective factors at school, concept of early intervention for pupils with special educational needs, management of an inclusive classroom).
  • The starting points of joint education in the context of the family.
  • Basics of joint education in the school context - characteristics of support measures. (Subtopics: course of the diagnostic process at school, factors of successful learning in inclusive teaching, the role of the teacher in the inclusive classroom, specifics of the evaluation process).
  • Basics of joint education in the context of pedagogical-psychological and special pedagogical consultancy.
  • Examples of good practice - in our country and around the world.
