- Course objectives
- The course combines theoretical and practical lessons for prospective nurses. It provides an overview of the importance of primary and secondary oncological prevention, etiological and predisposing factors and statistical data concerning the incidence of particular types of neoplastic disease. The course outlines the nature and differences of various types of clinical settings targeted at oncological care and therapy. An overview of particular clinical conditions impacting the quality of life of oncological patients and their families is provided.
- Syllabus
- 1. Epidemiology of malignancies; risk factors (tobacco, alcohol, occupational risks, radiation, diet, viruses, medicines etc.) Tumor classification based on tissue type.
2. Primary care: prevention and early detection; early warning signs of malignancies.
3. TNM classification system (size, invasion, node involvement, metastases).
4. Secondary care: diagnosis and treatment of malignant disorders (surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy).
5. Side effects of radiation therapy (acute and chronic) in various body systems; chemotherapy, chemotherapeutics (types and classification, side effects and manifestations of toxicity).
6. Emergencies and acute conditions in oncology (hyperkalcemia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, septic shock, spinal cord compression, cardiac tamponade, superior vena cava syndrome, tumor lysis syndrome, inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion syndrome).
7. Pain management in oncological patients.
8. Tertiary care, its organization and services based on needs of oncological patients (nursing homes, hospices, home care).
9. Skin care during radiation therapy. Alterations of nutrition in oncological patients.
10. Nursing care of an immunocompromised patient. Elevated risk of infection.
11. Nursing care of patients with alopecia and with oral cavity tissue changes (after radiation therapy or chemotherapy).
12. Nursing care of patients after chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
13. Nursing care of patients with nausea and vomiting (during cancer treatment); management of bleeding and anemia.
14. Nursing care of patients with constipation and diarrhea (during cancer treatment); nursing care of patients with sexual dysfunctions (during cancer treatment).

- Teacher's information
- Attendance in a minimum of 80 per cent of seminars is required for completion. Students who could not attend a number of lessons for serious reasons will be assigned extra tasks. Success in credit test.
Examination: written test after the credit test pass, a minimum of 80 per cent of correct answers are required.
