The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The course provides the students with detailed information about modern history of Austria from the decline of Hapsburg monarchy till present day. The focus of the course is on key events of Austrian political history (government changes, development of political system, foreign-political relations and links, institutions and important legal documents) and selected issues of economic and social development of modern Austria in connection with European or world events. The students will learn how the important European events and processes of last two centuries have been defining or influencing inner development of Austrian society as well as foreign-political orientation of Austrian state and its relation both with central European states and European powers. The seminar will include wide analysis of important events or documents from Austrian history of given period in which the students will participate in a form of seminar papers. The graduates should be able to use gained knowledge when evaluating events and processes of development of modern Austrian society and interpret their importance and consequences in central European or European territory.
Syllabus
  • 1. An outline of resources and literature to history of Hapsburg monarchy and Austria. The summary of development of Austrian countries till the end of the 18th century
    2. Development of Austrian monarchy in 19th century till 1867. Political and administrative development (origins of constitutionalism, origin of political parties), important social and economic changes.
    3. Development of Austro-Hungarian monarchy till 1914. Political and constitutional development, relations of national political representations, economic, social and cultural changes in period before World War I
    4. World War I and decline of monarchy, origin of Austrian republic (1914-1919)
    International connections, political system and socio-economic background of a new country. Relations with central European neighbours, national and territorial conflicts
    5. The First Austrian republic (1919-1938)
    Political and administrative development, social and economic changes, relations with neighbours, the rise of Nazism
    6. Austria as a part of Nazi Germany (1938-1939). So called Anschluss and its political, economic and social connections and consequences
    7. World War II and Austria (1939-1945). Economic and social impacts of war in Nazi Germany. Question of "victims and accomplices"
    8. The reconstruction of independent Austria (1945-1947). Post-war fate of Austria in conditions of commencing cold war - the attitude of powers, relations with neighbours, national questions and territorial conflicts, economic crisis
    9. Austria in divided Europe (1948-1955). Detente on international level and discussions about State contract, question of Austrian neutrality, economic revival
    10. Austria between east and west (1955-1989). The position of Austria in divided world, interpolitical and economic stabilisation in the 60´s and the 70´s. Resonance of Nazi history and rise of right-wing nationalists in the 80´s
    11. Austria after iron wall fall. Position of Austria in changed international situation and EU enter. Relations with central European neighbours.
    12. Final summary, evaluation of development and current position of Austria in Europe and its relations with neighbours and EU.
