- Course objectives
- LECTURE The course focuses on the development of the view on woman and her status in society during European history from Antiquity to recent times, especially in the periods when the concept of gender has played a central role in theoretical debates. The aim of the lectures is to inform students about different concepts, theoretical frameworks and visions though which gender relations were conceptualized and lived. This broader historical-theoretical context of gender issues would help them to understand contemporary social structure and theoretical discussions and enable them to use gender as an analytical tool in practice (this will be the contents of the following course Gender Studies). The course deals with mythological legends, philosophical conceptions, theological views and psychoanalysis if the concept of gender is important for them. Students will also learn about the women's movement in the Europe and the Czech lands. SEMINAR Seminars have a practical orientation. Their aim is to deepen the gender sensitivity of students, that is, their ability to realize gender aspects of their life and profession. In the seminars, the discussion about practical consequences and forms of gender inequality in family and society will be held in order to help students to understand their causes and sometimes pathological results we can encounter in our everyday experience. Students will report on current problems from the point of gender inequality in contemporary Czech society and develop their own attitude based on theoretical arguments on their causes and consequences. Students will be encouraged to offer a vision of possible ways how they might be solved.
