- Course objectives
- The aim of the subject is to deepen the students´ knowledge of ethnic processes and their socio-political context in application of national and minority policy in the Central European countries. The subject gives an outline of basic concepts of ethnic theory, national policy and status of national minorities in the Central European countries. It is focused on explanation of the causes, course and possibilities of solution of interethnic conflicts with stress put on border regions of Central Europe, as well as on learning relations between states and nations, national and ethnic minorities including evaluation of national myths, stereotypes and prejudice. The national issue is put in relation to historical development as well as contemporary socio-political context of its practical implementation in the Central European countries.

- 1. Sources and literature related to the topic, research institutions and projects, current research situation.
2. Basic terms of ethnic theory, models of relations between nations and states.
3. Formation of nations and national movements in Central Europe, causes and consequences of the division of Europe.
4. Nations and ethnic groups in the states of Central Europe (contemporary situation and problems).
5. Issues of preservation and revitalization of ethnic minority identity in Central and Eastern Europe.
6. The focal points of theory of ethnic conflicts, limits and possible solutions.
7. National character, myths, stereotypes and overcoming prejudice.
8. Multiculturalism and migration, models of migration policy.
9. Minority rights protection, comparison of national and European laws.
10. Minorities and marginalized groups, attitudes to work with minorities.
11. National and minority policy in public administration.
12. European Union, the Euroregions and other factors of stability in Central European space.

- Two written papers 1) review of a book or article concerning the issue of minorities 2) scientific article or essay focused on a particular topic from the field of minority groups problems and protection of minorities. The exam includes also written test aimed at verification of theoretical and practical knowledge.
