- Course objectives
- The objective of the course is to familiarize the student with principles of palliative and hospice care and certain issues related to dying and death. The course describes patient classification, indications for palliative/hospice care, issues related to death and dying and common challenges in caring for this specific patient population. On completion of the course the student will be able to orientate themselves theoretically and practically in the care of persons who suffer from incurable diseases or are dying. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student can explain and describe palliative and hospice care and common issues occurring in the care of persons with incurable conditions and of dying persons. Professional skills: The student is able to choose nursing interventions and approaches based on the current status of the patient. General ability: The student is able to assess patient status and choose appropriate interventions while planning nursing care. Competence: The student mediates to individuals, relatives, families and groups necessary information in an adequate manner within the scope of nursing competence. The student ensures that the information provided is comprehensible to clients/patients.

- 1. Palliative care, its forms and characteristic features. Target groups of palliative care.
2. Hospice care, its forms and characteristic features. Target groups of hospice care.
3. Personal management in palliative and hospice care. Prevention of burn-out.
4. Dying and death. Ethical aspects of nursing care of the dying.
5. Needs of dying patients and their relatives, spiritual care.
6. Assessment of signs and symptoms in palliative care.
7. Pain management.

- Credit requirements: 80% attendance in seminars. Students who could not attend a number of lessons for serious reasons will be assigned extra tasks.
