Course objectives
Students learn why regional, transborder cooperation in EU countries is important, and how regional structures in Central Europe are functioning, with special attention to the transborder regions in Central European Countries. They are also acquaint with basics and rules of regional policy in EU and practical examples of their performance will be given. During lectures an international cooperation models as a component of political, social and economic integration in Central European regions will be presented with special attention to INTERreg Program.
Syllabus
  • 1. General information on regional structures. Definitions of regions. Types and forms of regions. How to define a region.
    2. How do regions grow? Why do some regions grow more rapidly than others do?
    3. Why are differences in levels of social welfare across regions so persistent?
    4. Typical problems of regional development and cooperation in EU and in Central European Countries.
    5. Causes and consequences of regional disparities in EU. Patterns of regional disparities in the Central Europe.
    6. Regional development theories and its utilisation in EU regional cooperation programs.
    7. Regional policy in Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, its evolution, goals and main directions.
    8. Institutions and forms of regional cooperation in Europe.
    9. Economic and social effects of regional cooperation in Central Europe Countries
    10. Transborder co-operation genesis with special attention to Central Europe. Concepts of Euro-regions, Euro-regions in Central and Eastern Europe.
