Course objectives
The course objective is to map out the specifics of the elderly, touch their needs, both their appetite for activity and inactivity. The aim is to learn to create motivation and animation programmes, considering and addressing the clients’ motivation, respecting individuality of the individual, as well as supporting them in their integration into the community. In this course, students learn the composite sub-therapeutic methods, their advantages and weaknesses, and they can get a sense of their usage in practical drills. Emphasis will also be placed on the specifics of therapeutic care with specific groups of people, making the student prepared for potential obstacles in the use of acquired skills.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge: Students will learn the bio-psycho-socio-spiritual view of a senior person, they will be able to map their basic needs and wishes and support their motivation to spend time in a meaningful way. They can list a number of therapeutic methods and techniques from which they are also able to select a suitable alternative for the target group. Thanks to the practical exercises, they will experience their own skills working with people.

Professional skills: Students can contribute with their expertise to create a comprehensive treatment plan for the care of the elderly. They are able to carry out partial therapeutic methods in practice both individually and in groups. They draw inspiration in conducting the activities from both the recommended resources, and practical exercises that help them find their own strengths and limitations.

General qualification: Having completed the course, students will be able to perceive care for seniors holistically, realize the complexity of their needs and customize the therapeutic activity individually. Of the many techniques, they will be able to choose the appropriate procedures according to the available information about the client and according to the needs of the institution. Student will be supported by instruction to adopt sincerity in their approach to the client, flexible reactions to changes and usage of creative techniques.

  • 1. Definition of animation - broader and narrower concepts. Personality of the elderly person, their needs. Specifics of working with senior population
  • 2. Ways of working, principles of conducting therapeutic interventions. Individual vs. group approach. Therapeutic relationship
  • 3. Motivation of a senior. Care planning with regard to the selected specific features
  • 4. Training of cognitive functions
  • 5. Activity and occupational therapy, leisure activities
  • 6. Reminiscent therapy.
  • 7. Education. Senior education
  • 8. Relaxation methods. Basal stimulation
  • 9. Crisis intervention, activation therapy
  • 10. Art therapy. Animal assisted therapies. Music therapy. Movement therapy
  • 11. Specifics of therapeutic care of elderly people with somatic handicaps
  • 12. Specifics of therapeutic care to elderly people with psychiatric illness
  • 13. Possibilities for therapeutic work with the caring persons
