Assignment of credit is the active participation of students in seminars (70%). The credit is awarded on the basis of the creation of an expert's report, in which the student expresses his / her particular structure.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is only offered to the students of the study fields the course is directly associated with.
Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the opportunities offered by doctoral studies and to equip them with the necessary knowledge for the application of the scientific approach to solving economic problems in business practice. In the course of the semester, students will gradually become acquainted with what science is about how it works and what role it plays in society. They will be presented with opportunities to apply the scientific way of thinking in both research and business management practices. They gain knowledge about how to find relevant resources, how to work with them, and critically evaluate them. They will also learn basic information about research methods and how to set research aims, define research questions, and define research hypotheses for their own projects.
Syllabus
  • 1. The importance of science - a basic view of science and research, motivation for research
    The role of university education in the process of shifting the limits of human knowledge and showing the importance of scientific outputs not only in the natural sciences but also in the corporate economy and management.
    2. Characteristics and objectives of doctoral study - principles of doctoral study, research project
    Introduction of fundamental differences between the post-graduate study and doctoral studies. Developing career development opportunities, engaging in research projects, and working on your own dissertation project. Students will also be exposed to extensive opportunities to travel or visit conferences in the Czech Republic and abroad.
    3. Science and Research - Quality Assessment and Research Assessment, Scientific Community and Database, Citation
    Clarification of the functioning of scientific research activities at university. Introducing a quality research system in the Czech Republic and showing a search for suitable literature and expert publications from databases containing scientific work such as Web of Science, Scopus or Science Direct. Use of Zotero citation manager as an appropriate quote management tool.
    4. Research Methods - Research Philosophies, Strategies and Approaches
    Introducing qualitative, quantitative and mixed approaches to solving research problems. Adoption of the principle of scientific approach to solving problems in economic practice and familiarization with the system of organization of the scientific text IMRAD.
    5. Methods of data collection and processing
    Enhance the data collection capabilities that will be used in the processing process to generate information that will lead to the goal. Basic statistical methods, appropriate statistical software or simulation of BPM business processes models will be presented for data processing.
    6. Critical thinking, overview of literature and research questions
    Characteristics of basic principles of critical thinking that will simplify the work with literature and the evaluation of resources for the preparation of the literature review. To compile a literature review and to build on relevant research questions and hypotheses. The student will be able to independently evaluate the quality of the selected scientific article and prepare a review report.
