Course objectives

The aim of this course is to provide students with the basic concepts, functionalities and architectures of information systems, management information systems and decision support systems. Topics include use of information to further the organization's mission and strategy, the role of users, the architecture of information and development of decision-support processes for managers. Great emphasis is put on the presentation of advanced information tools and methods such as business intelligence, data mining, etc. and their use to support enterprise management, production, business, logistics, marketing, etc.

Syllabus

• Information systems (IS) and Management information systems (MIS)
  Nowadays, IS are basic components of both business and non-profit organizations. One of the main trends in information systems is the development of decision support functionalities. In this context, we are talking about MIS. The basic point is an explanation of basic concepts such as data, information, knowledge, system, IS, MIS, digital firm, business process, management, decision making, decision making models and classification of decision making situations, management as the direct user of an MIS vs. Intermediary use, and strategic business objectives of IS and MIS.
  MIS applications
  Only correctly selected and implemented MIS can provide an optimal support. In terms of usability, we can categorize MIS into Management Reporting Systems (MRS), Decision Support Systems (DSS), Group Decision Support Systems (GDSS), Office Information Systems (OIS), Knowledge Based Systems that support management such as Expert Systems (ES) and Neural Network (NN) systems.
  MIS relationships
  MIS does not work separately but is usually a part of an integrated business system. Therefore, the important is relationships of MIS to other enterprise applications, such as Transaction Processing Systems (TPS) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. IS and MIS within functional areas such as Human Resources, Marketing & Sales, Production, Accounting & Finance, Customer Relationships Management (CRM), Product Supply Chain Management systems.
  Data sources and processing in MIS
  The primary prerequisite for decision making is sufficient input data and adequate methods for data processing. In this context, it is necessary to focus on the application of On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP)/Data mining/Business Intelligence (BI) tools in supporting management decision making, and data warehouses and data mining facilities: the relationship between data warehousing and other MIS facilities.
  MIS and Digital firm
  It is generally known that MIS play increasingly important role in the business world and emergence of the Internet technologies plays key role in the Internet commerce. Current and future development will be geared to the issue of so-called digital intelligent firms. Open, accessible and last but not least intelligent technologies require new management approaches increasingly based on outputs from MIS.
  MIS in global business environment
  Global business refers to international trade whereas a global business is a company doing business across the world. Global scope requires new approaches to knowledge management, projects management, production management, human resource management, and so on, and generally enhancing decision making. In connection with these facts it is crucial to define global information needs, global information sources and technology for managing information.
