Course objectives
The aim of the course is to teach students to distinguish in practice the different layers of the national language, layers of literary and non-literary Czech, understand the difference between speech and writing, lead them to master the basic spelling and grammatical phenomena of Czech, principles of literary pronunciation and cultivated communication with a focus on their own practice of expression . The focus of teaching should therefore be aimed primarily at the fact that students are able to functionally use the acquired knowledge in communication practice. The instruction on individual phenomena is conceived in such a way that it is based not only on theoretical interpretations, but is based on examples and demonstrations that are part of current communication practice.

Syllabus
  • 1. Differentiation of the Czech national language - social and territorial stratification; standard and non - standard Czech 2. Functional range of the Czech language; functional styles, stylistic differentiation of language means; differences in the use of means of expression with respect to specific communication spheres 3. Speech and writing; distinctive features 4. Characteristics of the Czech sentence structure; principles of punctuation in the Czech sentence, the most common mistakes 5. Verbal connections, formal and semantic continuity of words in a sentence 6. Meaning of words, idioms and Czech phraseology, its use in communication practice 7. Spelling and problematic phenomena of Czech spelling 8. Capital letters, abbreviations, symbols, numbers, tags in public communications 9. Pronunciation styles, pronunciation of foreign words 10. Internationalisms in the Czech language, suitability and unsuitability of the use of anglicisms in individual spheres of public communication 11. Selected phenomena of timing and declension; verbal doublets, declension of foreign words and names; gender inflection 12. Selected phenomena of adjectives, pronouns and numerals 13. Excessively used words in contemporary Czech, limited grammatical, semantic and stylistic differentiation in communication practice
