Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with the necessary knowledge in the issue of financial instruments as well as with using selected analytical methods. Theoretical background of fundamental, technical and psychological analysis will be provided and also selected financial derivatives will be described. In globalized world it is also necessary to understand differences between investing into bonds, stocks and commodities. Practically it will be provided basics within using econometrics in EViews software. Time series will be tested whether or not they are stationary, then it will be examined daily returns, correlation analysis and estimated regression models.
  • Efficient market hypothesis and stock market analyses
    Theoretical assumptions of market efficiency introduces fundamental, technical as well as psychological analysis among capital markets. Students will gain knowledge to vary between these analyses. They will understand buying and selling signals according to moving averages and see differences between the global, sectoral an individual analysis of shares.
    Financial derivatives
    It will be described differences between financial futures, foreign exchange forwards, swaps and also option contracts. Students will gain knowledge where is the difference between short and long position of an investor, who has rights or obligation to sell or buy some kind of instrument and what types of exotic contracts we should differentiate. It is connected with counting of a few kinds of examples according to that issue, as well.
    Time series econometrics
    Students will be introduced to basics within financial econometrics within the seminars. It is computer based. Firstly, they will download real data from financial markets. Secondly they will import that into EViews software, where they will analyse these time series. Very briefly, it includes acceptation or rejection of null hypothesis whether or not the time series are affected by a unit root process. After calculating daily returns, correlation or cointegration analysis will take a place. Finally, they will gain knowledge about theoretical assumptions as well as about practical usage of regression analysis.
    Investing into commodities
    Variety of investment commodities is really wide nowadays. Therefore it should also be paid attention to that issue. Students will know investment characteristics and differences between selected commodity markets and why an investor would be interested in commodities when an investment portfolio is made.
