Der Aufsatz beschäftigt sich mit Cyril V. Connollys gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs erschienenem Essay über die Figur des Palinurus, des schiffbrüchigen Steuermanns bei Vergil, der von Eingeborenen erschlagen und unbegraben liegengelassen wurde. Die Metapher des Steuermanns in Literatur und politischer Geschichte wird an wenigen Beispielen betrachtet, und mögliche aktuelle Implikationen in der gegenwärtigen europäischen 'Fluechtlingskrise' werden reflektiert.

The essay deals with Cyril V. Connolly's essay on the character of Palinurus in Vergil; the former pilot of Aeneas,who falls overboard, is slain by the locals at Cap Palinuro, and left unburied. The essay follows the metaphor of the pilot through a few examples taken form literature and politival history, and considers possibel implications for the actual 'crisis of migrants' in Europe.
