Anotace
Taking on an oath was a part of everyday life in a medieval city. It was not only binding the urban community together but it was also an efficient means of communication among its members. Since the medieval urban environment was in many ways a space for emancipation, the question arises whether such an important phenomenon covered also women - or not. And if so, in which way? And can we observe any development in this field? This paper focuses on analysing the position of women in oaths from urban environments using the example of selected cities (Silesian and Northern Moravian region). Emphasis is on both – oaths meant for women, and the role women played in the texts of oaths intended for men. The phenomenon is followed here for a long period of time extending from the beginning of the 15th century to the end of the 18th century.
