Stredoeurópske objavovanie subsaharskej Afriky prostredníctvom informácií z historických dokumentov a kníh má tradíciu siahajúcu do 16.storočia. V 19. storočí sa uskutočnila prvá rakúsko-uhorská výprava cestovateľa Emila Holuba, ktorá priniesla muzeálne zbierky európskeho významu a snahu o ich trvalé sprístupnenie. V súčasnosti približuje materiálny a duchovný svet subsaharskej Afriky niekoľko čiastkových muzeálnych expozícií, ale žiadne špecializované múzeum. Tento potenciál majú dve súkromné zbierky - Africká zbierka Ivana Melicherčíka z Bratislavy a Africká zbierka Jiřího Blatu z Opavy.
In English
Central European exploration of Sub-Saharan Africa through information from historical documents and books dates back to the 16th century. In the 19th century, the first Austro-Hungarian expedition organised by explorer Emil Holub took place. It made available collections of European importance. In modern days, the material and spiritual worlds of Sub-Saharan Africa are presented in several museum exhibitions. Among private collections, there are two distinct ones – the African Collection of Ivan Melichercik from Bratislava and the African Collection of Jiri Blata from Opava.
