Africká zbierka Ivana Melicherčíka v pôvodnom rozsahu obsahujúca približne 1.000 kusov, sa dlhoročnou zberateľskou činnosťou autora vyprofilovala na súbor 400 sakrálnych, či kultových predmetov zo subsaharskej Afriky. Tieto reprezentujú predovšetkým tri kultúrne okruhy. Kultúrna oblasť Západnej Afriky a Guinejského zálivu je aj jedna z troch dominantných zberateľských tém v zbierke. Podobne početne zastúpená je v súbore kultúra Centrálnej Afriky, zahŕňajúca konžské etniká a Gabon. Súčasťou tohto okruhu je aj kolekcia mbulu ngulu, ktorá má vyše 140 kusov a patrí k najväčším svojho druhu v Európe. Tento súbor jedným z klenotov zbierky. Treťou preferovanou oblasťou je kultúra Sahelu a saván. Skladba zbierky je výsledok niekoľko desaťročí trvajúcej činnosti a postupného zdokonaľovania a cizelovania. Jej prezentácia v rámci SNM je možnosťou dať impulz na rozvoj afrikanistického bádania na Slovensku a zároveň otvorenia kultúrneho dialógu.

The African collection of Ivan Melicherčík, originally comprising approximately 1,000 pieces, has developed over many years of collecting into a collection of 400 sacred or cult objects from sub-Saharan Africa. These represent mainly three cultural circles. The cultural region of West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea is also one of the three dominant collecting themes in the collection. Central African culture, comprising Congolese ethnic groups and Gabon, is similarly well represented in the collection. The Mbulu Ngulu collection, which has over 140 pieces and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, is also part of this group. This set one of the jewels of the collection. The third preferred area is the culture of the Sahel and savannahs. The composition of the collection is the result of several decades of activity and gradual refinement and refinement. Its presentation within the SNM is an opportunity to give impetus to the development of African studies in Slovakia and at the same time to open a cultural dialogue.
