The research points to a growing trend of seniors going into debt due to insufficient pensions and rising living costs, leading to a precarious financial situation. The tendency of seniors to easily trust creditors without fully understanding the terms of loans contributes to their financial vulnerability, often leading to a cycle of debt from which they cannot escape. The study also reports that some seniors borrow money for altruistic reasons or to manage existing debts, a risky strategy known as "loan cursing". Despite the introduction of a three-year debt resolution period for seniors from June 2019, the proposed changes to the Insolvency Act are expected to have a limited impact on this age group. The study advocates for stricter regulation of the insolvency process to prevent abuse and ensure that seniors only enter insolvency under legitimate conditions. ER -
