Abstract
The article focuses on the relevance of female characters present in the work of J. R. R. Tolkien, namely the genre of high fantasy, in terms of modern literary perspective concerning feminist literary criticism and the issue of female roles connected to femininity and stereotypical roles in general. Apart from the brief classification of the perspective, the paper emphasises the traditional female roles of mother, wife and housekeeper together with their deviations present in the author’s publications. Furthermore, the absence of femininity and the general question of its importance within the work of Tolkien is addressed. The article aims to accentuate a point of view rarely associated with the author, highlighting the establishment of a certain foundation for a modern depiction of female characters of the fantasy genre.
