The paper deals with dragons as the representation of power in George R. R. Martin´s A Song of Ice and Fire. Firstly, the concept of political authority in the series of novels is briefly introduced. Then the focus is placed on the gendered nature of political authority in the saga and the analysis of the political authority and power of female characters in the context of ownership and use of dragons. The paper further addresses ‘the woman and the dragon’ and ‘the man and the dragon’ motif in literature. It is explained how dragons contribute to the link between sovereign power and gender subordination in the series of novels. It is especially the narrative arc of Daenerys Targaryen that offers the best insight into the researched issue, thus special attention is paid to this character in the presentation. The aim is to clarify how gender is contested in a world, where one petite woman holds a power equivalent to nuclear weapons and how successful she can be in reinforcing both patriarchal hierarchies and gendered aspects of political authority.
