This paper examines one of the key features of cyberpunk literature, isolation. This feature of isolation seems paradoxical as typical cyberpunk societies are portrayed as technologically advanced and of information-based nature, utilizing some form of global communication platform. Despite this interconnectedness, the element of isolation persists. The paper argues that the cause of this isolation is advanced technology. To explore the theme of isolation in cyberpunk literature, analysis of William Gibson’s Sprawl trilogy is conducted. Furthermore, examples are drawn from other chiefly cyberpunk works such as Neil Stephenson’s Snow Crash (1992) and Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One (2011).
