Brownfields, abandoned and unused buildings and sites, are an integral part of our urban space and man-made cultural landscape. They are naturally located in the cadastres of towns and municipalities and in many cases they are also the property of these municipalities, but at this stage they serve no purpose, have no useful function and are gradually deteriorating. In general, there are a number of tools, procedures and approaches to prevent this, often unnecessary, decline of the original state of the property. The public sector has a key role to play here and, with few exceptions, is shaping and creating a system of support activities aimed at helping to regenerate these buildings. The aim of this article is to determine the current financial instruments provided by the public sector that can be used by municipalities to regenerate brownfield sites in their ownership. However, this is not a description of financial instruments, which have no general overlap into the future. The fact remains that a number of these programmes, calls and subsidy titles are implemented continuously with a long- term perspective and, where appropriate, only change in content, destination or are presented under a different name in response to the new EU programming period and to the public sector stakeholders' own decisions.
