In the original language
In English
The word ‘betrayal’ or ‘betrayer’ has a clearly negative connotation in the tragedy “Ein Bruderzwist in Habsburg”. It is used in connection with the enemies and is intended to disqualify them as human beings and negotiating partners. However, the problem of betrayal is very complex in “Bruderzwist”. Some characters in the drama commit betrayal without feeling guilty about it. These characters, above all Melchior Klesel, the advisor of the pretender Mathias, consider betrayal to be the necessary means to a higher goal. They refer to the bad situation in the country and believe they can only overcome the misery by unorthodox means. Other characters, above all the Bohemian estates, regard betrayal as an acceptable means of realising their particularistic interests. In doing so, they act in a very contemporary manner, as their times favour particularism. The aim of the study is to present betrayal in the “Bruderzwist” as both a remedy and a symptom of the age suffering from particularism.
